WAITING
UPON GOD
"But
they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength: they shall mount up
with wings as eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not
faint" (Isaiah 40:31).
There is
never a time when we aren't waiting for something we want to happen. There is
always someone going through some terrible hurtful trial, I want to be released
right now, not next week or next month. I want to see God's promise fulfilled
now!
Such thinking can end up creating frustration, worry and anxiety, even in the
strongest believer. I think that happens because we misunderstand the promise
of such Scripture as Isaiah 40:31.
God permits situations that cause us to rely completely on Him. He wants to
teach us how to live in His thoughts regardless of the circumstances. Dr.
Chesterton once said, "I believe in getting into hot water. It keeps you
clean." And I believe there is to be sure, the need for a testing in our
life to see, if in fact, our faith is genuine, and many times there is no
better test than the hot water of sorrows and trials.
In Psalm 69:17, the psalmist cried out, "Hear me speedily!".
But that is not always God's way. If it were, our lives would be reduced to
a formula. Our vocabulary and lifestyle would never experience the progressive
nature of categorical faith (Romans 1:17).
Waiting upon God implies confidence and faith in His Word in spite of
circumstances or consequences. By waiting expectantly on God we exchange our
mind for His thoughts. We are renewed. We are strengthened. As we are filled,
we become more competent and even reckless in our faith despite our human
weaknesses.
Then, He will enable us to mount up. We will be able to soar effortlessly above
even extreme trials and difficulties. If we really desire to experience
"abundant life", then God must teach us how to wait on Him.
